Flat Head Pillow Reviews

Use a Flat Head Pillow

In our view, using a good baby flat head pillow is one of the most simple and effective ways of helping to prevent and treat baby flat head. There are many flat head pillows on the market and some are more effective than others. Some (in our opinion) are best used only as a secondary pillow rather than for prolonged use and others we consider unsafe. Below we have given some information on some popular pillows, our view on them, as well as a selection of reviews from other parents who have used these products so that you can make up your own mind.

Gio Pillow           Our Comments:  5 stars for mimos baby pillow

Gio Pillow for baby flat head  Great to prevent and reverse baby flat head

Fully breathable (made from 3D breathable air-mesh)

Structural design allows air to circulate which helps keep baby cool

  Sterilised with UV light

Anti-Allergen and Anti-Dust Mite with a repellancy rate of 98.2%

FDA Approved (USA) Class 1 Medical Device

CE Approved (European) EN71-1 Certified Safe Product for babies

The Gio Pillow is made with a 3D breathable air mesh and we love the breathability of this pillow and the anti-allergy and anti-dust mite protection. The pillow is sterilised with UV light and vacumm packed for hygiene. It comes well wrapped in an attractive box, so makes a great newborn baby gift. When we tested the pillow we held it fully against our mouth and nose and it didn't restrict breathing at all.  We would be happy to use this pillow with our own baby in a cot without supervision. The pillow is fully washable and a pillow cover is included.

Baby can freely move her head from side to side and because the pillow takes so much pressure off the skull, there is no need to keep repositioning baby's head. Once baby gets more mobile or starts moving around in her sleep you may want to use the pillow together with a Snoooz Sleep Positioner to help keep her head on the pillow throughout the night.

The pillow comes in three sizes and starting price is around £40. The small size is designed for a new born baby 0-8 months, medium pillow for babies 6 to 24 months and large size for toddlers 2 to 8 years old. The large size is more for comfort as at this age baby flat head would not be able to be reversed. In our view the price of this pillow is well worth the money, especially when compared with the cost of a cranial helmet which averages around £3000. It is also a small price to pay when you consider that, if left untreated, baby flat head can become permanent and be something your child has for the rest of his life.

Personally if I were buying this for a new born baby and only wanted to purchase one pillow I would purchase the medium size, provided my baby was full term. However ideally you would have one pillow in baby's cot and another in the pram, in which case I would order a small size and a medium size and use the small size in baby's cot up until 8 months of age, so that baby's spine is corrected positioned on the correctly sized pillow. After that I would swap the pillows round so that the medium sized pillow is in the baby's cot from the age of 8 months and the smaller pillow in the pram. Having two pillows save you having to keep remembering to put the pillow in the pram every time you go out.

I cannot recommend the Gio pillow highly enough and would certainly use this pillow myself if I were to have another baby.

The Gio pillow is made in Korea and is fairly new to the UK market. It has been recommended by the Korean Atopy Association. Below is a selection of reviews from other parents.

Pillow Retains its Shape 5 stars for mimos baby pillow

Ever since my so was born we've tried all sorts of flat head pillows including the Mimos pillow. I wish I had tried this one sooner because this one is by far the sturdiest and it's holding up. And it doesn't hurt to have the cute dino print either 🙂 I highly recommend for the price and it's nice it comes sterilized and well packaged.

Happy Mum and Lovely Company 5 stars for mimos baby pillow

Best baby's product so far and really pleased with the purchase of Gio Pillow and my LO sleeps well at night. The company is very family friendly and supportive throughout the process. Highly recommended to anyone. Thumbs Up.!

Soft and Comfortable Pillow

Gio pillow is really soft and comfortable.  We bought this pillow purely for flat head prevention tool. It keeps my baby’s head and spine in alignment and help’s my baby sleep better. So far this is the best product I ever bought for my baby girl. Definitely recommend to new mums.

Magical Pillow

My 2 months old baby has a mild flat head on one side and very unsettled during the night due to heat trapped around him, thanks to the 3D mesh material allow air flow surrounding his head and neck area, my baby sweats less and sleeps well. This is a magical pillow to improve his head shape within 3 weeks and in helping my baby sleep through the night.

Best Flat Head Pillow

Our Little one was constantly sleeping on one side for the first 14 weeks without a pillow, I noticed a mild flattening on the left side. After did some research about the flat head baby we decided went for Gio Pillow, after started for 2 months the flat head completely disappeared. Really happy with our purchase!

Five Stars Pillow

Thank goodness we found a decent product helping my son’s flat head correction. Our 4 months old baby has flat head syndrome and we were told to for an expensive helmet treatment cost thousands!! Luckily after 4-6 weeks of using Gio Pillow the flatten side gradually regrown to becoming normal and all heading in the right direction. And we were over the mood and thanks god we got this special baby pillow.

Best Value Baby Pillow on Market

My 7 weeks old boy developed a noticeable flatten head on one side, but there are many different types & prices of pillow you could buy on the market. I did some research and decided to try on Gio pillow. The flatten side gradually improve after 2 weeks of using this pillow and we were very pleased with the product!

Baby Mimos Pillow

Our Comments:  5 stars for mimos baby pillow

baby flat head pillow by mimo

Great pillow  – Reduces pressure against the skull by a massive 400%.

Fully breathable (has an anti-suffocation TUV certification) which allows airflow and helps regulate baby's temperature

Allergen and chemical free

Helps keep baby's spine in correct position.

No need to keep repositioning baby's head

The MIMOS Baby Pillow reduces pressure against a baby's head by a massive 400%. It is made of a structure which is 94% air which means it is fully breathable, comfortable and light weight. It has received an anti-suffocation certificate from the TUV which is an independent international product inspector. When we tested the pillow we held it fully against our mouth and nose and it didn't restrict breathing at all.  We would be happy to use this pillow with our own baby in a cot without supervision. The pillow is fully washable and pillow covers are also available.

The Mimos pillow is allergen and chemical free, which makes it a great choice for parents concerned about the chemicals found in other types of flat head pillows.

The sizes were previously confusing and have now been revised and now come in XS, S, M and L.  The XS size is for premature babies and L is for babies more than 18 months old. The S size can be used for babies from birth (for full term babies), or once your baby's head circumference is at least 36cm, and can be used up to about 10 months of age.  If you are trying to correct an already flattened head and your baby is a little older, then the M size would probably be the most suitable for you, which can be used from 5 months to about 18 months.

If you are trying to keep costs down and just want to purchase one size of the Mimos pillow, then provided your baby was full term, we would suggest you purchase the S pillow. This size is suitable from birth up to about ten months of age, which is the most important period for protecting your baby's head, as this is the stage when your baby's head is growing rapidly and is soft and capable of being moulded.

We have not read a single negative review about the Mimos pillow. Below is a selection of reviews from other parents.

 Reviews of  MIMOS Baby Pillow

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Fantastic!!!
This product is simply fantastic! I've been using it for my baby since he was 1 week old and I can attest to its claim of anti-suffocation because the product material allows free air flow. Again, my baby is now 3 months old and he sleeps soundly and has no sign of plagiocephaly. It's simply amazing and I recommend it to everybody
5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic pillow!
I bought this pillow when my little boy was 5 months old. He has a large head for his age and it was becoming flat at the back despite using a Goi Goi pillow from birth. After weeks of stress trying to alternate putting him on his side to help his flat head and him rolling onto his back again making the situation worse this pillow solved all my problems! No repositioning is required as specified and within a few weeks there was a noticeable difference to his head and it's the best it has ever looked. This is the best pillow on the market to treat babies with a flat heads but also to prevent them from getting a flat head in the first place in my opinion. I wish I had known about Mimos earlier as it would have prevented him from getting a flat head at all.
5.0 out of 5 stars This pillow is amazing!!

My little boy was born prematurely and I noticed that from about 3 weeks of age, his head was starting to flatten on one side. I took him to the health visitor who advised that a referral would be made to see the baby osteopath. I started to read around about flat head syndrome as his head continued to get flatter on one side even with me moving/turning his head to the other side whilst he slept so as to balance out the uneveness. I looked at the variety of pillows on amazon, internet and read the reviews. In the end i decided on this one, though it is very expensive for a baby pillow, it is definitely worth it. I noticed an immediate improvement within a week of him using it. He pretty much settled into his new pillow by the second night. Although he still slept on his favoured side, the pressure was taken off by the structure of the pillow. After approx 2 months, we were called in to see the osteopath (first appointment) and by then his head was pretty much round and symmetrical. I am glad i bought the pillow, if I had just simply waited, my son's head would have become more and more flat on one side as even at the time of seeing the health visitor, it was obviously looking flat on one side. It might be expensive but it is worth every penny. He is now 7 months old and still enjoying his pillow. I found it also makes good use as a tummy time pillow.

5.0 out of 5 stars  Fantastic
After much research and recommendation, this is by far the best product I've come across. It is simply fantastic. Amazing. Would definitely recommend.
5.0 out of 5 stars  Would recommend

I was recommended by a friend to buy this pillow for my grandson as she had bought one for her grandson and was very happy with the results. My grandson is 4 months and the XL was perfect for him. I am amazed at how quickly it has begun to help re shape my grandson's flat head. My daughter was dubious when I gave it to her but only after one week she too is very happy.

5.0 out of 5 stars  Innovative product to help prevent Flat Head Syndrome
Fantastic and innovative product to help prevent Plagiocephaly (Flat Head Syndrome). My son is 3 months old and I use the Mimos Pillow as a preventative tool and he has taken to the Mimos Pillow very well. He sleeps through the night and I do not have to worry about him developing a flat head or pressure spot thanks to this genius design. 5 out of 5!

Clevamama Baby Pillow

clevamama flat head pillow     Our Comments:

Very good pillow for preventing positional plagiocephaly – reduces pressure by 50%. The second highest reduction which we have found for a flat head pillow (Mimos pillow comes top, reducing pressure by 400%).

Good when used with the Snoooz Sleep Positioner to protect unflattened side, keep baby positioned on her back and to keep her head on the pillow, although please note that unlike the Mimos Pillow, the Clevamama pillow is not breathable.

Comfortable and keeps baby's spine in good alignment and helps maintain an open airway

The Clevamama Clevafoam Baby Pillow is made from memory foam which reacts to the heat and weight of the baby's head and moulds itself around the head, reducing pressure against the skull by 50%. It has been scientically proven to prevent and treat baby flat head syndrome. The contour of the pillow keeps the baby's posture in the optimum position for her spine and for maintaining an open airway. Toddler size Clevamama pillows are also available as well as replacement pillow covers.

Here are a sample of some other reviews of the Clevamama pillow which overwhelmingly tends to score very highly.  Some people did not seem to realise that there is actually a zipped pillow case on the product which can be removed to be washed and also that additional pillow cases can be purchased. The majority of people seemed to think that the pillow is a good size although some people felt that it could be a bit longer for using it in a cot, as their baby tended to roll off it overnight. However, we thought the pillow was a perfect size and it could easily be used with the Snoooz sleep positioner to keep your child positioned on the pillow. A toddler size pillow is also available.

Negative points for the pillow is that it is made from memory foam so has been chemically treated and it is not breathable.

Reviews of Clevamama Clevafoam Flat Head Pillow

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect little baby pillow
We bought this pillow to help our baby son who had a slightly flat head at the back and had outgrown a smaller head pillow. This was perfect size, big enough for 2+ months onwards, shallow and soft. Our son sleeps quite happily on his back or side using the pillow.
5.0 out of 5 stars The best baby pillow!!!
I bought some other baby pillow before this when I was concerned about the flat spot on my baby's head when he was one month old. That pillow is huge and made baby's head hot and sweaty. Also it looks dangerous if baby can roll over. Then I came across this memory foam pillow and decided to give it a try. It is perfect! Baby is very comfortable on it and the flat spot is gone after one month! Baby has been using this pillow for four months now. This is one of the best thing I bought for him. I would buy a toddler's version when he grows older.
5.0 out of 5 starsMy two year old still loves it!
I bought this when my son was a couple of months old simply for comfort – we've never had a flat head issue. He is now approaching 2 and still loves it. He sleeps on his side or face down and it provides a nice, soft layer for his head, often with his arms underneath it, sometimes cuddling it. As it is thin I have no worries about him developing bad posture as thicker, normal pillow would. I suppose the time will soon come to get him his first duvet and proper pillow but until then this is perfect and I highly recommend it. It is also very easy to wash, great for dribblers.
5.0 out of 5 stars love it

Love it , it's great and comfortable and my baby loved it and helped him with his flat head

5.0 out of 5 stars Really good – I want one for me too!

Really nice quality pillow, I'm not worried at all about a smothering risk, however I must add that my baby is swaddled so the risk is quite low anyway.  The pillow is lovely and soft, the memory form is perfect for posture and preventing flat head syndrome, and it's putting my mind at ease that the pillow will help to prevent this. I want one for myself (adult sized, of course!).   I would definitely recommend to others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great purchase
I bought this pillow after after my baby's 3 month check-up. The doctor said that the head was a bit uneven, one ear was further in front. Baby in fact prefers to sleep with the head turned to the left. I had wanted to buy this pillow already before baby's birth but hubby thought is was a waste of money. Well, bought it then straight away and now 6 weeks later at the latest check up baby's head was pronounced as perfectly round and symmetrical. What a great purchase! Does what is promises, can recommend.
4.0 out of 5 stars Really good item but could be bigger

This is a really good item. I bought it for my 10 month old and it certainly makes for a more comfortable night's sleep. The only reason I didn't give five stars is because I think it could do with being bigger as my baby's head comes off the pillow on either side. Also, a little pillow cover would be great to help with laundering.

Theraline Baby Pillow

Our Comments:

Theraline Flat Head Pillow

Is fully breathable, washes well and dries quickly

Good for use in a bouncy seat or swing

Too small for use in a cot unless used with the Snoozzz Sleep Positioner to keep child positioned on the pillow as hard to keep baby on the pillow

Only available from the UK

The Theraline baby pillow is made of a breathable material and is therefore suitable for babies from 0 to 12 months. It claims that it is the only flat head pillow available which is safe for use in a baby's cot even when baby is able to move and roll over, but actually the Mimos Pillow is also suitable for such use.  The size of the pillow means that it fits neatly in a bouncy seat or baby swing but there have been a number of criticisms that the pillow is too small to be of much use. However this issue could be overcome if you use it in a cot together with a sleep positioner which is designed to keep a baby on her back and in one position, which should help ensure that your baby's head stays on the pillow.  Here is a sample of reviews on the Theraline baby pillow, which seems to only be available from the UK.  This pillow no longer seems to be available on Amazon.

Reviews of Theraline Baby Flat Head Pillow

5.0 out of 5 stars great product
This has really helped to improve the shape of my son's head. I didn't think it would do much but the improvement is very noticeable. He finds it very comfortable – we use it when he is in his pram as well as in his cot, and it's easy to wash too.

5.0 out of 5 stars amazing results in a short period of time

I bought this pillow for my 5 month old son who had a head turning preference and would only look, and lay on the right side of his head making him have a flat head. I spoke to my health vistor about it, who said she would be speaking to the physio and my son would get referred, in this time I bought this pillow and his head has really improved! He no longer needs physio and we've only been using it under a month! I would definitely recomend this pillow and I've been nicely surprised at how much difference it's made in such a short period of time.

5.0 out of 5 stars great product
We were not really convinced on buying this, it seemed a bit expensive for an item that we didn't know would work or not. But it worked brilliantly. We could see a gradual change after just a few days and every day it gets a little bit better.
5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent product!
Excellent product, should be recommended to all new parents. Our baby had developed a very flat head and this pillow has helped take the pressure off the back of his head to allow it to 'round out'.
4.0 out of 5 stars A Little Peace of Mind

The pillow did seem to help prevent my son's head becoming more misshapen while he was sleeping on a hard matress. Found it well worth the money.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but very small

I bought this for my 4 month old son who has a flat spot on the back of his head. Firstly the breathability of the pillow is unbelievable, if you put it tight against your face you can breath perfectly normally through it as if it wasn't there so is an extremely safe solution. However as other people stated it is small and I found it just too small to work. It's a 6 inch square and if your baby is old enough to have any wriggle ability then they will come off it in the middle of the night. I think you would have to have a very still sleeping probably under 3 month old for this to work effectively. So 5 out of 5 for safety but 2 out of 5 for design as it's just too small. We subsequently bought a baby memory foam pillow (which was also cheaper) which works a treat but I would not be happy using (because of lack of breathability) before my baby could lift their head well. So it's good if you spot the flat head problem early enough, but if your baby's older, or wriggles while sleeping look elsewhere.

Heart Pillow

   Our Comments:

Small handy pillow to use as a secondary pillow to carry in a nappy changing bag or to use in a bouncy seat or swing

Too small and not effective enough for use as a primary pillow or in a cot and baby tends to roll out of it quite easily

The heart has a hole in the middle to cushion baby's head so that it is not resting directly against a hard surface.  We had two similar Pillows and left one on the nappy changing unit at home and the other in the nappy changing bag.

We would not recommend using this as your only flat head pillow or in a cot. It is recommended for babies between 0 to 24 months. It is a good low cost pillow to have as a small additional pillow.  Below is a selection of reviews for this pillow and pillows with a similar design.

Reviews

5.0 out of 5 stars Great quality

Perfect size and also light weight. Good quality and fits in the Moses basket too! Good value for money

5.0 out of 5 stars would recommend
I bought this for my daughter who was born with slightly flatter head at one side and rather than spend thousands on some helmets etc on the market, I used this when she was playing under her gym etc, and it really helped her – two years on and I use it with my son, although he didn't share the problem, but it's good for prevention and cure! would highly recommend – washes well too and has maintained its colour and shape perfectly.
4.0 out of 5 stars Lovenest
My daughter really enjoys sleeping with her head on the lovenest, and it has given me piece of mind that the natural shape of her head is being preserved. I also use it when she is lying under her baby gym just to give some extra cushioning.
1.0 out of 5 stars poor design and average pillow

My 3 month-old son sleeps turning his head on the left and he has developed a bit of flat "patches" on the left and on the back. I previously used Lilla Kuddis pilow which is a complete crap, excuse my french. However, I have just recently received the Lovenest Head Support and yet to see how it is going to help to correct my baby's scull. So far, the design is poor in reality, it looks much better on the picture. That's why I rate it as 1 star and if in the future I see the improvements I am glad to update my review. The hole is not really deep as some people described it here. The baby can easily move the head – which is exactly I didn't want him to do.

3.0 out of 5 starsok for a little head support but not preventing flathead

Nice and soft. Hasn't prevented flat head, when washed has discoloured and looks grubby.

Anti-Pressure Baby Head Support Pillow

The Anti-Pressure Baby Head Support Pillow (butterfly pillow) is similar to the Love Nest Pillow in that it has a hole in the centre to relieve pressure from the back of baby's head and to stop baby getting a hot head, but baby stays in the pillow better. If using it in a cot it could be placed under the sheet for safety.

Many people report being very happy with this pillow and that their baby stays put on the pillow throughout the night. However the pillow is very shallow and there is a ridge around the hole which could cause further flat spots on a baby's head if this pillow is used as the only flat head pillow. We would recommend just using a hole shaped flat head pillow as a secondary pillow for daytime use to complement another type of flathead pillow so that the pressure on your child's head is varied. The following is a selection of reviews on the Anti-Pressure Baby Head Support Pillow which seems to only be available from the UK.  The nearest equivalent outside of the UK is probably the BabyMoon Pillow or the Noggin Nestbut these pillows are not suitable for use in a cot or for naps, just for daytime use under supervision for use in the pram, activity mat, swing and bouncer.

Reviews of Anti-Pressure Baby Head Support Pillow

5.0 out of 5 stars Stop flat head syndrome
Brilliant item, baby is very comfortable without getting a 'hot head'. Definitely recommend this pillow against cheaper makes.
5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent product
I saw the reviews of this product were good and decided to get one! I am very impressed with this product and it has made a difference just in the few weeks of using it.  My son had quite severe flat had due to an injury to his head from when he was born – he was only lying on one side of his head, causing such severe flat head he had a point forming.  I started using the pillow as soon as it arrived and the flat head has nearly corrected itself! I like the fact that he can still move his head around and that he is not restricted in any way!     I would definitely buy this product again and would certainly recommend it.
5.0 out of 5 stars excellent product
I brought this product for my son as he was only sleeping on one side of his head and it was becoming very flat and had a point to the back and we couldn't make him sleep on the other side of his head. He is now 5 months old and his head is back to normal.   THe pillow washes really well and then dries quickly. Very happy with this product.
5.0 out of 5 stars Is your baby developing a flat head?
I bought this pillow because my 7 week old was developing a flat spot on the back of his head. This is really important because my first son now over 2 and a half years old use to lie with his head on the left and his head is flat on that side and has a slightly odd shape. Someone had mentioned it to me and said to try and get him to sleep on the other side, or try a sponge wedged under his head so he doesn't sleep on that side but he wouldn't stay in the same place. My advice is as soon as you think baby is developing a flat head sort it out straight away.
5.0 out of 5 stars excellent product

4.0 out of 5 stars better than theraline!
I bought this after wasting money on the theraline pillow- baby's head would not stay put. he is 3 months and doesn't roll but likes to nuzzle his head to get comfy when drifting off. Found with theraline he would simply slide off the pillow. This butterfly pillow is brilliant, no matter how much he nuzzles, his head still stays in the hollow.  Slept on it from 11pm till 8 am and was still in the same place. Have not given it full star rating simply because its not safe for rolling babies as not breathable like the theraline ( but pointless having a completely safe pillow when it doesn't serve its function of being a pillow, nevermind being a pillow for flat head!!!)
3.0 out of 5 stars Good but not suitable for long term use

I bought this as my baby had quite a pronounced flat head at the back. Initially it worked really well, having placed it under his cot sheet for him to sleep on at night. However, after using it for two months or so, whilst the previous flat spot has become more rounded, a new flat spot has appeared where the ridge of the pillow is at the bottom. We have therefore had to stop using it and are now waiting for the second flat spot to round out. The end result is that the back of the head looks less flat overall but to touch there are now two flat spots where previously there was only one. I am reasonably confident that both will even out over time (baby is only four and a half months old), perhaps using the pillow on alternate nights would have produced better results.
